The Texas Voter Registration Guide

New address. Update your voter registration.

Moving to Texas means updating a lot of records. If you're eligible and want to register to vote, here's how Texas voter registration works.

↓ Here's the process
The number to remember

Think 30 days before Election Day.

Texas voter registration generally becomes effective on the 30th day after you submit your application. To vote in an upcoming election, make sure you meet that election's registration deadline.

For the November 3, 2026 election, the registration deadline is Monday, October 5, 2026.
01
First things first

Check that you're eligible.

Texas sets eligibility requirements for voter registration. Before filling out the application, make sure you meet them.

□ You're a United States citizen
□ You're a resident of the Texas county where you're registering
□ You'll be at least 18 years old on Election Day
□ You meet Texas's other voter eligibility requirements
New to Texas? Voter registration is county-based, so your Texas county of residence matters.
Step two

First-time registration? There's still paper involved.

Texas lets you fill out a voter registration application online, but completing the form on the website alone does not register you.

For a new registration, you'll need to print and sign the application and send it to your county voter registrar.

01 Complete the application
02 Print it
03 Sign it
04 Send it to your county voter registrar
02
The application

Have the basics ready.

The Texas voter registration application asks for information used by your county registrar to determine your eligibility and create your voter record.

□ Full legal name
□ Texas residence address
□ Mailing address, if different
□ Date of birth
□ Required identification information
□ Previous registration information, when applicable
Already registered in Texas?

Moved? Update the address.

If you're already registered in Texas and have changed your address, update your voter registration so your record reflects where you now live.

Existing Texas voters can update voter registration information online through the state's online services, or use other methods provided by the voter registrar.

03
Same state. Different county.

Your county matters.

Texas voter registration is tied to your county of residence. If your move takes you into another Texas county, make sure your registration reflects your new residence.

If an election is approaching and your registration hasn't caught up with your move, special voting procedures may apply depending on whether you moved within the same county or into a different county.

Don't guess close to Election Day. Check your registration status and contact your county election office if your address isn't right.
Last step

Check that it worked.

Once you've submitted or updated your registration, use Texas's official voter tools to confirm your registration status before an election.

01 Check your registration status
02 Confirm your registered address
03 Review upcoming election dates
04 Check voting locations and information when available
Another moving task handled.

New address. One less thing on the list.

Moving to Texas comes with plenty of paperwork. Knock it out one task at a time, then get back to settling into your new home.
